Coffee, Culture, History –Coffee House at Alipore Jail Museum!
Alipore Central Correctional Home, located on Judges Court Road on the banks of the ‘Adi Ganga,’ was built in 1906 as Alipore Jail and is famed for housing renowned freedom fighters during the pre-independence era. The imposing red brick edifice visible from outside the large iron gates exemplifies the grandeur of colonial architecture. The stunning main building of the correctional home towers over the solid cement walls.
Though a few historic structures within this prison have already been reduced to rubble, the remainder of the structures that are still standing witnessed the history being written by the luminaries who were detained in this jail.
The Newtown Coffee House opens a second location at the Alipore Jail Museum, which can accommodate more than 60 people at once. The interior is similar to the iconic one, with hanging ceiling fans and kori-borga ceilings, while the floor has hexagonal tiles with a 3D effect and a verandah, as well as seating arrangements. The Coffee House is divided into three rooms, each with an LCD TV that shows pictures from the museum and walls that are creatively decorated with illustrations. Frames with the history of Kolkata are placed in each room. The menu is similar to that of the Newtown Coffee House, with tea, coffee, sandwiches, omelettes, fish fingers, chowmin, and a variety of other items. The menu includes infusion, onion pakoda, and kabiraji, all of which are inspired by the Newtown Coffee House.
